Ethics

All individuals who teach or provide services at UMSHC are expected to abide by a Code of Ethics.  The Code of Ethics of ASHA is available online at asha.org.  The Code delineates responsibility to the welfare of our patients, our responsibility to behave as professional, our responsibilities to other professionals, and our responsibilities to the public.

All students, faculty, and staff are expected to abide by this Code of Ethics in their conduct of clinical and academic responsibilities in the UMSHC.  It is assumed that the principles that are practiced in the UMSHC and CSD will continue to guide each student as they enter the profession of speech pathology upon graduation.

Patient Rights

UMSHC and CSD are committed to providing each patient with their rights.  The UMSHC provides treatment without regard to race, creed, nationality, gender, or source of payment.  Our patients are encouraged to ask questions about their rights if they do not understand.

The client or parent/guardian is given a copy of Patient Rights and Responsibilities, which defines their rights at their first visit to the Speech and Hearing Center.

Patient Privacy

UMSHC is committed to maintaining the privacy of its clients.  Information pertaining to patients and their families is personal and private.  The privacy of clients is also maintained with documents and records of clients.  While documentation is extremely important, the UMSHC must comply with the requirements of the ways in which information may be shared.  Patients are to receive a Notice of Privacy Practices that explains their rights to privacy.   Students should read and be familiar with the contents of this document and be prepared to answer questions about it.
